Why Isn't Terminator The New Lost?

Watching last night's episode of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, I couldn't help wondering why this show hasn't become the new Lost, with a cult following and 12 million viewers. The Terminator show deserves it: last night's episode wasn't the best of the season, by a long chalk, but it was thrilling and disturbing, and it raised questions I was thinking about all day today. Oh, and there are spoilers.

In last night's episode, there were three main plot strands. The two minor ones: the body of the dead Terminator has gone missing and John Connor and his pet Terminator are searching for it, and Sarah Connor is having crazy dreams. And then the major one: Jesse (BSG's Stephanie Jacobsen) has found Charlie Fisher, the guy who collaborated with the machines and tortured people in the future.

The two minor plotlines were so-so — the best part about them was the business with the turtles. Sarah faces the Blade Runner test — she sees a turtle on its back — and she passes with flying colors. Summer doesn't quite understand why you'd bother, and thus she beats the crap out of former FBI Agent Ellison. Meanwhile, Sarah is having weird surreal dreams about turtles and motherhood and wearing a weird prairie dress, and she has an unhelpful session with Skynet's therapist.

But the major plotline was pure win, as you can see from that clip above. Jesse needs to prove to Derek that she's really captured a Skynet collaborator from the future, and hasn't just kidnapped some random innocent guy. So she finds the present-day Charlie Fisher, a young, callow guy who used to be Warren on Buffy. The scene where the old Charlie tells the young Charlie he has no clue who he is utterly rules.

And then the final twist opens a whole can of worms that adds whole layers to every part of the show: In Jesse's version of the future, Derek was tortured and broken down mercilessly by Charlie. But Derek doesn't remember these events, because he comes from a different version of the future. The only possible explanation: Derek has changed the future since he came back in time, but not necessarily for the better. Between the time Derek traveled back and the time Jesse came back to join him, he's changed things enough that Skynet's empire of torture has gotten big and powerful enough to ensnare Derek. Both Charlie and Jesse "remember" this same future, because they both came back more recently than Derek.

What's the change that Derek made, that led to him later being captured and tortured? Was it the nuclear power plant he inadvertantly handed over to Skynet? Or something else?

This kind of multi-layered playing with the timeline reminds me of Lost at its best, especially episodes like "The Constant." The characters are becoming rich enough, the mythology dense enough, to justify the kind of mass devotion that Lost inspires too. So why is the Terminator show still struggling with around 5.3 million viewers, below even Chuck?

Off the top of my head, a few ideas, with particular reference to last night's episode.

1) People think they know what it's about, because it's based on a movie franchise. There are plenty of mysteries, but we know how it ends: Judgment Day.

2) Not enough alpha males. Look at last night's episode: three storylines, each featuring a strong woman waving a gun. (Even the feverish Sarah brandished a gun a few times.) In all three storylines, a male character is trying to restrain or understand the woman. By contrast, Lost is chock full 'o' alpha males, who come into conflict with each other.

3) No shippers. There's nobody to ship on this show. Last night's episode didn't even include John's love interest Riley (yay), and Jesse and Derek are an established couple. (With trouble on the horizon, I'm betting.) There are no love triangles, no frustrated lovers. I would like to see a Sarah-Charley Dixon-Agent Ellison triangle, but it's apparently not happening.

4) It's too science fictional. Lost producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof said in a recent interview that their show had been disguised as a regular drama, and then sneaked in scifi ideas over time. Terminator couldn't do that. And last night's episode used time travel in a very different way than "The Constant." Both episodes were great, but "The Constant" was more emotional and relatable, less bleak and tied up with the theory of time travel.

5) It doesn't have as many compelling minor characters. Last night's episode basically featured our leads, plus the two Charlie Fishers and the shrink who doesn't want to be called a shrink. I doubt we'll be seeing Charlie Fisher again, but I do hope we get more insight into the shrink, who's a promising character. Weirdly, for such an epic show, it's much smaller and more intimate than Lost, which has a huge cast.

That's what I can think of off the top of my head. I might do a larger post on that topic at some point, although I'm sure it's a bit of an apples/oranges comparison. In any case, the main thing Lost and T:SCC have in common is that they've both grown on me a lot lately. I liked Sarah Connor's first season, and it had a few really strong episodes, but it's taken off in its second season. Too bad the ratings haven't followed.

Minor observations:

Did Joss Whedon direct this episode? There was a big moment revolving around Summer Glau's feet.

Also, Cameron likes crappy pop music.

This episode made me crave bad food court Chinese food. And cheeseburgers.

Brian Austin Green, still most valuable player.

Who photoshopped that weird picture of Sarah and a dog?

Did older Charles Fisher cause younger Charles Fisher to get sent to prison? I don't really like that kind of circular time-travel logic, but I'll give it a pass.

I just finish reading this Crime Pulp, thanks to the book reviews and Interviews from Criminal (Ed Brubaker's Crime Noir comics series) I have been looking for the little pulps in used books stores. This, I was pleased to find out, is one in a series of books starring private detective Pete McGrath. It was pretty refreshing to get to the last chapter of this book having no idea of the way it was going to resolve itself out, sans an "out of the hat" plot twist. On top of the great story and characters, this books offer a nice style of covers of which information is less than scarce. In this case it seems to be a heavy filtered photograph (illustrations or paintings are more common place) very softly illuminated and composed with a lovely selection of colors, type is very basic and not too carefully chosen, placing however respects the art and serves it purpose. The inside of the book jumps right into the middle of the action with the first page, a sample of a tense moment in the story accompanied by the title gives way to the usual intro pages and then to the yellowed filled and red edged pages of this very recommendable story.

Heroes (Volume 3)

Last Night Heroes started his much delayed Volume 3, the two episodes were full of exposition in order to resume last Season events, and how the character got where they are now, like in our X-Men books it seems the writers decided to scrap some old plots and move forward with the next one. This could be excellent (if they pick them up later). We were introduced to the "villains" of season in the last 5 minutes and couple of reveals made the overall experience good but not great. Lets hope that now that the new status quo is established we can go ahead and have good stories. A pleasent surprice was the addition of Jamie Hector (Marlo Stanfield from the Wire) if he is half as creepy in this as he was in The Wire this season is going to be fun.

Anoche comenzo el muy demorado Volumen Numero 3, estos dos episodios estuvieron llenos de esposicion para explicar todo lo que paso en la temporada dos y como los personajes llegaron a donde estan ahora. Como en nuestro queridos comics de X-Men parece que los escritores decidieron desacerces de algunas historias viejas que estaban desarrollando, y seguir adelante con la nueva historia. Esto puede ser muy bueno (siempre y cuando lo retomen en el futuro). Nos introdujeron a los "Villanos" de esta temporada en los ultimos 5 munutos y trancurrieron un par de revelaciones interesante que hicieron la experienciaa completa buena pero no Excelente . Esperemos que ahora que todo el "texto" explicativo esta fuera de el camino podamos disfrutar de buenas historias. Una sorpresa agradable fue la suma a el elenco de Jamie Hector (que fue Marlo Stanfield en the Wire) si es la mitad de salado en esto de lo que fue en The Wire esta temporada va a estar buena.

Yo la vi ayer en IMAX (estuvieron buenas las escenas de alta alta.. alta definicion pero no se si valio la pena el viaje en tren y las horas de espera) La pelicula es sin duda la mejor de Batman de todos los tiempos El Joker me hizo pensar que si Jack Nickolson ubiera actuado esa parte despues de The Shining ubiera sido muy parecido a lo Ledger hizo (Traduccion Ledger es tan bueno como Nickolson era cuando era bueno). Pequeños tesoros de Fan joy desparramados durante las dos horas y pico, referencias a la serie animada de los 90 y el Mejor Dos-Caras la hacen muy pero muy disfrutable. Mas alla de ser una buena pelicula basada en comic books es terrible peliculon! se le podrian sacar las mascaras y los nombres coloridos y todavia seria una muy buena pelicula. Es ironico que V for Vendeta era sobre la anarquia en el comic pero no en la pelicula y ahora la pelicula de Batman es sobre anarkia. Exelente Film que no se puede perder.

Me convencio que mas alla de si sea o no una reencarnacio en celuloide de las palabras de Alan Moore y los dibujos de Gibbons va a valer la pena ir a verla. Y que DC se va a patiar las bolas por no haber hecho la Justigue League antes que Watchmen.

The teaser trailer for Terminator 4 is out, and John Connor is still looking grim. The smokin', shaven-headed Christian Bale uses his sexy Batman voice to tell us we're all going to die. Add some shots of robots stepping on skulls and dangling bodies, and I'm pretty sold. I hate to let a well-edited trailer get to me, but man, this movie looks bad ass. It also features our first look at the Terminator aqua bots.

Devil May Care is the thirty-sixth James Bond novel. Written by Sebastian Faulks ("writing as Ian Fleming"), it was published on 28 May 2008, the 100th anniversary of Bond creator Ian Fleming's birth.[1][update needed]

The popular novelist, famous for Charlotte Gray and Birdsong, was selected by the estate of the late 007-author in 2006, though his identity was not revealed to the public until July 2007 when a publishing date for the work was officially announced along with its title.

The novel is set in the Cold War in 1967 (and in Ian Fleming's original continuity, following The Man With The Golden Gun) and the action is played out "across two continents, exotic locations and some of the world's most thrilling cities".[2] U.S. publisher Doubleday confirmed one of the locations will be Paris. [3]

Many online and print sources (for example, AOL Entertainment [4]) erroneously stated that Devil May Care will be the first new James Bond novel published since 1966. In fact, dozens of full-length Bond novels were published, officially, between 1968 and 2002 by the authors Kingsley Amis (as "Robert Markham"), John Pearson, Christopher Wood, John Gardner, and Raymond Benson. In addition, Charlie Higson and Samantha Weinberg (as "Kate Westbrook") have been publishing Bond-related novels since 2005. Faulks' book is, however, the first novel to focus on the adult James Bond, as conceived by Fleming, since 2002 and, as noted above, it takes place in the time-frame of Fleming's original novels, the first such book since Amis' Colonel Sun (discounting the spin-off Young Bond and The Moneypenny Diaries lines).

The jacket artwork features the model Tuuli Shipster, muse of the British photographer, Rankin. Tuuli said: "I was thrilled that Penguin chose me to be their Bond girl. Devil May Care has been published in hardback by Penguin Books in the UK and its territories (Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Europe) and in Ireland. Penguin are launching a brand new imprint – Penguin 007 – under which they will publish all their Bond titles, including Devil May Care.[5]

We’ve officially started principal photography on Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. Like you guys, I’ve been a long-time fan of the series and I understand your passion for the Terminator movies -- and it’s my full intention to deliver a film that lives up to the previous three installments. I’ve spent time with James Cameron, spoken to Arnold Schwarzenegger, gone over the story with Jonah Nolan, and enlisted Stan Winston.

Everything we’re shooting is designed to be tactile and real, you’ll be seeing a whole set of inspired designs you’ve never seen before, and best of all you’ll finally get to see some of the post-judgment day future that was only hinted at in the previous movies.

John Connor will be pushed to the brink. And for me, Christian Bale embodies Connor’s strength and tenacity perfectly. And after visiting Sam Worthington on the set of Avatar, I know he’s perfect for his role.

As you know, Anton Yelchin is playing Kyle Reese, and his prep has been unbelievable. The guy's been watching all three Terminators incessantly and he’s definitely going to capture the essence of the character Michael Biehn created in Cameron’s first film.

We started principal photography with a sequence at Griffith Observatory. I've already seen a cut of it -- Anton and Sam are excellent. I’ll have more on that soon, and can’t wait to share some of what we’re doing with you all. Stay tuned for more.

The Future Begins has started production in the New Mexico desert, with Christian Bale and Sam Worthington on board to star in the film as John Connor and Marcus Wright, respectively. The movie website is currently a blank page, but there's a strong possibility it will launch sometime tomorrow. (So keep refreshing, fanboys!) Directed by McG, the man responsible for the cultural institution known as The O.C., Terminator Salvation will be set in 2018 where John Connor is fighting Skynet to ensure the future he's destined for.

However, a mysterious man by the name of Marcus Wright appears, and was not part of the prophecy known to Connor. As Connor figures out whether the amnesiac man came from the past or future, the two begin a quest to exterminate Skynet once and for all.

Headey Reveals Connor Chronicles

Lena Headey, who stars in the Fox SF drama pilot The Sarah Connor Chronicles, told SCI FI Wire that the show will begin with a confrontation between Headey's title character; her son, John Connor (Heroes' Thomas Dekker); and two new Terminators: a female model, played by Serenity's Summer Glau, and a male one, which she called Cromartie, played by Owain Yeoman. One is good and one is bad; she didn't say which is which. (Glau's character is named Cameron, an apparent nod to Terminator franchise creator James Cameron.)

The pilot, which picks up the story from the end of the feature film Terminator 2: Judgment Day, begins in the desert, and "it ends with them landing in L.A., having run and escaped. Or maybe not," Headey said in an interview at WonderCon in San Francisco on March 3.

"We just finished [shooting]," Headey (300) said. "We were in Albuquerque [N.M.] for a month. And it was very intense, because TV is crazy. I mean, it's long days. It's like boom, boom, boom. You don't get any respite. But ... I think it's going to be great. I don't know if its going to be picked up, because it's only in pilot stage right now. But I learned to shoot many weapons and how to recognize a Terminator. So it was a good experience."

The pilot "begins, and it's them basically running, hiding, trying to live," Headey said. "Trying to carve out a normal life for themselves, but always being watched and trying to locate Skynet, trying to stop [it]. But there are many, many issues in their way."

First Photo for The Sarah Connor Chronicles

The first photo for the Sarah Connor Chronicles has popped online via a Foreign Fansite. Not terribly exciting but the first pic none the less. Besides starring in Frank Miller’s highly stylized and exciting new epic "300," Lena Headey is caught in a war that will come to television with FOX’s "The Sarah Connor Chronicles," the TV series spun from the "Terminator" mythology. There has been much speculation about when, where, and how the show would be starting. Though it’s been established that it would take place after "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," there’s still a lot of questions out there regarding the exact setup for the timeline and mythos.

Headey commented to Sci Fi Wire about the show’s general premise; "It's them basically running, hiding, trying to live. Trying to carve out a normal life for themselves, but always being watched and trying to locate Skynet, trying to stop [it]. But there are many, many issues in their way." She also said that they just finished filming; "We were in Albuquerque [N.M.] for a month. And it was very intense, because TV is crazy. I mean, it's long days. It's like boom, boom, boom. You don't get any respite. But ... I think it's going to be great. I don't know if its going to be picked up, because it's only in pilot stage right now." She says that, but with all the buzz around it, and the rise of "Terminator 4" talk, this series has a better shot than most with an established fanbase to stand on.

She also spoke a little about how exactly it will begin, attempting to clear up some of that mystery. Apparently, the pilot will begin with a confrontation of some kind between her character Sarah Connor, son and soon-to-be savior of mankind John Connor, and two new terminators; one male and one female. The male terminator will be played by Owain Yeoman of the failed series, "The Nine." The female will be named Cameron, which harkens to the "Terminator" origin, its writer/director/producer James Cameron, and may hint that this is the good terminator (though Headey did not specify which would be the villain), and she will be played by Summer Glau, star of the all too short-lived FOX series "Firefly" and the movie based on the cult sensation Joss Whedon series "Serenity."

There’s more than enough going on here to spark interest for a season at least, and if they do it right and stay true to elements that made "Terminator" a cult sci-fi/action classic, then fans could be able to enjoy elements such as the strong and toughened Sarah Connor and the future gone awry with one great chance for a hero story that twists in time-space continuum circles that sweep us up in the apocalyptic chaos, and all this on a weekly basis. Seriality is all the rage right now, and if they can make "Chronicles" something that sucks us in and keeps us coming back for more, then this could be the next great sci-fi show, but some might call that great expectations this early in the game.

Two local guys from Girona (a town near Campdevànol) Spain, have captured some footage of a strange 'creature' in the woods. They also found blood and some detached white wings (3m). They have been investigating paranormal activity in the area for quite a few months now and believe they have really discovered a non-human life-form. The footage is unbelievable.

Stanley 'Tookie' Williams, co-founder of the Crip street gang in LosAngeles, was executed in San Quentin Prison on December 13 just aftermidnight.By his own account, Williams co-founded the Crips street gang in LosAngeles. He was convicted of four murders and sentenced to death in 1981.Whatever Williams may or may not have done in the gang life, he hasmaintained his innocence in the case that sent him to Death Row--a casebased on circumstantial evidence and testimony by witnesses who were facingfelony charges including fraud, rape, murder, and mutilation. Even the 9thCircuit Court of Appeals admitted in a September 10, 2002 ruling that thewitnesses in Williams' case had incentives to lie in order to obtainleniency from the state in either charging or sentencing.There is an cruel, sick irony in the fact that Stanley Williams is facingexecution. By the system's own standards he has been a model prisoner. Hehas spoken out against gang violence, and written Tookie Speaks Out AgainstGang Violence--a series of eight books that are in schools, libraries, andjuvenile correctional facilities throughout the nation and around the world.The television movie starring Jamie Foxx, Redemption, was based on his life.Williams has received numerous awards including five nominations for theNobel Peace Prize.Williams played an important role in promoting the gang truce movement,which emerged especially out of the fires of the L.A. rebellion in 1992.When other gang leaders in Watts asked him to voice his support for the gangPeace Treaty in 1993, Williams sent a videotaped message upholding thetreaty to a gang summit.The U.S. just executed the 1,000th person since the Supreme Courtre-legalized the death penalty in 1976. A majority of people on Death Roware people of color--including 77% of all federal death row prisoners. Thedeath penalty in this society is a ruthless enforcement of oppression.California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger coldly and callously refused togrant him clemency, saying that the facts do not justify overturning thecourt decision. Even though Tookie Williams had changed and became a veryoutspoken advocate against gang violence and for peace. They showed him nomercy. But it is deeper than this. In a highly political statement,Schwarzenegger also said that Tookie Williams' 1998 book Life In Prison wasdedicated to people like Assata Shakur, Mumia Abu Jamal and particularlyBlack militant George Jackson which, according to Schwarzenegger, is asignificant indicator that Williams is not reformed and that he still seesviolence and lawlessness as legitimate means to address societal problems.George Jackson and the other prominent Black figures mentioned inSchwarzeneggers statement are heroes to a lot of Black people and people ofall races and nationalities because of their revolutionary stance. This isproof that this is a politically motivated execution.It does not matter to Schwarzenegger and the powers-that-be that StanleyWilliams has changed. That he has consistently spoken out against gangviolence. Or that the evidence which led to his conviction of four murdersin 1981 was circumstantial and that the testimony against him came frompeople facing felony charges of fraud, rape, murder, and mutilation. Or thathe had consistently and repeatedly said that he is innocent.Since his final appeal was denied, the powers-that-be have put StanleyWilliams execution on a fast track. They moved it up ahead of people who hadtheir final appeals rejected before him.This represents a leap in the vicious, racist, and genocidal program theyhave for the masses of people in the inner cities. Many of the youth of theinner city have no jobs and no prospects of ever being employed. The systemhas no productive use for them. The working of this capitalist systems putspeople in desperate situations where crime becomes the only option for many,many of them to live. Then, Black and other oppressed youth are attacked andmaligned and demonized. William Bennett, a former adviser to Ronald Reagan,has said: If you want to get rid of crime you could abort all Black babiesand the crime rate would go down. Thats genocide.The execution of Tookie Williams comes on the heels of Hurricane Katrina,where tens of thousands of Black people were left to die. The Bush regime ismaking it LOUD AND CLEAR.Look at what they did. People in New Orleans did not have to die. But thepowers that be left thousands of people to suffer and die needlessly, whileat the same time demonizing them and sending in the National Guard tosuppress them. Didnt Bush himself issue an order to shoot to killanyone whowas caught looting, no questions asked? The system's well-oiled propagandamachine spewed out lies about Black people raping babies and robbing andmurdering each other. The very clear message was: the masses of Black peoplein New Orleans were demons and deserved to die.Hundreds and even thousands of people who tried to get into New Orleans torescue, feed and give medical aid to people were stopped by the army andpolice and prevented them from helping people. A congressman from Louisianasaid they had been trying to get rid of the projects in New Orleans foryears and god decided to do them a favor by getting rid of them.Again the message was that Black people are bad seeds who do not deserve tolive.Pat Robertson, one of Bushs Christian Fascist advisors, has called for abiblical model for crime and punishment which suggests genocide against themasses of people in the inner cities as well as preparation to use extremerepression and even execution against people who do things which are minorcrimes or in many cases no crime at all.What kind of system is this that does these things? It is one that cries outfor proletarian revolution..Although Stanley Tookie Williams was not a revolutionary, he dedicated hisbook Blue Rage, Black Redemption in this way: To poor people, prisoners,slaves and the disenfranchised everywhere through faith and theories putinto practice you bend the most oppressive circumstances to your will, tomake the impossible possible.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (second gig)

Ghost in the Shell (the tv show) also know as the anime show that made me read a book, is back for a second season. The first thing I noted was: Produced by the Ghost in the Shell committee, this indicated to me some kind of loss of funding, what I think is very common in anime shows. The second thing I noted was a significant decreased in the animation quality, that went from a fairly realistic approach to the more "classic" anime look in the character designs and backgrounds. Is a shame that an outstanding show like this both in animation and content gets a character doing a monologue with a 2 frame animation. But regardless of that the second episode "Night Cruise" delivers an excellent character driven plot orbiting around a lonely "Notes from the Underground" kind of character that reminded me why Ghost in the Shell is such a good show and so different from anything else on animation or even tv.

The Real Godzilla and King Kong

Godzilla! That’s what they’re calling a brand new (though 135 million year old) species of crocodile found in fossil form in Patagonia, in the southern tip of South America. During the Jurassic Period, that region was submerged in a tropical bay and, as we now know, was home to one of the fiercest creatures to ever swim the seas. Though technically a crocodile, the Dakosaurus andiniensis differed greatly from our modern croc—and even more so from its contemporaries.
Measuring thirteen feet, the Dakosaurus had fish-like fins in place of feet, meaning that it never came on land like our modern crocodilians. Far stranger, though, was its head: whereas other crocodiles of the Jurassic Period had long, slender snouts and long thin teeth good for tossing back lots of little fish, the Dakosaurus’s head more closely resembled a Tyrannosaurus rex. Its snout was short and high, and its jaw spanned a foot and a half, full of huge, serrated teeth—the biggest ones reaching four inches, about the size of a width of your palm. Though there is no way to know for sure what the Dakosaurus ate, we can be sure it was big. Diego Pol, a researcher at the Mathematical Biosciences Institute and the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Ohio State University, said, “Dakosaurus probably fed on other large marine reptiles.” Although the Dakosaurus differed from other crocodiles in many ways and closely resembled some of the large, predatory land dinosaurs, there are sufficient similarities to be sure it was indeed a crocodile.. Pol says it is an example of convergent evolution, the process by which mostly unrelated organisms may acquire very similar characteristics even when evolving in different ecosystems. Pol worked with Zulma Gasparini of the National University at La Plata in Argentina. Their findings were published on November 10 in the online version of Science.
While Dakosaurus died out with the dinosaurs, the modern crocodile is a living testament to its lineage. Likewise do we see reflections of Gigantopithecus Blacki, the ten-foot tall, 1,200-pound primate which some call King Kong, in today’s gorillas and orangutans. The only remains of the Gigantopithecus we have are the fossils of three jawbones and close to a thousand teeth—some collected at digs and some collected from Chinese apothecary shops, who sell “dragon bones,” or fossils, for their believed curative properties. However, much can be approximated from just teeth and jawbones. Using an average head-to-body ratio of the modern orangutan and Australopithecus afarensis (“Lucy”), a one-inch wide molar becomes a ten-foot ape. Other than the size, our visual of Giantopithecus is more-or-less speculative, but one thing is for sure—the 1,200-pound ape was not a tree-dweller like the orangutan. For that reason scientists generally agree that its body would have more closely resembled that of the earthbound gorilla.
Now one other thing is for sure: The Gigantopithecus walked the earth at the same time and in the same regions as did early humans. Using an extremely precise dating method which uses electron spin resonance to determine the age of organic material, geochronologist and associate professor at McMaster University Jack Rink recently discovered that Gigantopithecus roamed southern China for nearly a million years—up until 100,000 years ago, when the species became extinct. During this time span that region was also host to the human race, as it was undergoing important evolutionary changes. In fact, one theory is that the early humans contributed to the Gigantopithecus’s demise: the giant ape, man, and a now-extict giant panda are all thought to have been consumers of bamboo. The giant ape and panda wanted it for food, and man wanted it for tools. With a less voracious appetite but a more resourceful brain, us humans apparently won the competition. For my part, I’m just glad we don’t compete for food with giant squids.
